Eternal things have been on my mind since I imagined God striding across the telephone lines next to my South Carolina home when I was two. She resembled my skinny, wild-eyed mother; only she had green skin, and looked pissed off. That god still echos down the backside of my mind, but somewhere along the way, I realized this image could not be God. This book is the story of how I came to realize God is entirely better than my childhood image.
Dragging in God by His Left Hind Foot (294 pages) is a miscellany of poetry and essays on spirituality with a context of Southern life in the 50's and 60's. The book is also informed by living 33 years in Chicago and seeing my original culture from different perspectives. I even threw in a few recipes so you could get the, uh, the flavor of each influence.
A friend once said that Southerners always drag God into every conversation by His left hind foot. I am guilty, but I think you will find my guilt a pleasure. (The cover and cartoon are by Laura Greenwald, www.chickymonkey.com )
